Our congregation is small, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t make a big difference in our community! We have strategically chosen to focus our community service in order to make the biggest difference possible. And we don’t only want to give financially, but we want to be involved with our hands, feet, and heart. That’s why I’m inviting you to come with me to the BiG informational meeting this Thursday (tomorrow night!!!), March 3rd from 6:00-7:00PM at Church of Christ Room 102. The Church of Christ is located at 1525 W University Ave, Georgetown, TX 78628.
What is BiG? BiG is a program for people with disabilities that provides them the opportunity to discover friendship and value through work. BiG is unashamedly gospel-centered and you can see the Holy Spirit in the attitudes and demeanor of everyone participating. You really have to go experience it. Those in the program (whom are called “citizens”) find their special place in the process of making art, textiles, and gardening. Now BiG is preparing to open a café, where the citizens can work making coffee and food items. Needless to say, this opens up a great opportunity for us to become more involved with BiG. I certainly plan on making their café my “office” for a few days out of the week! Guess what question I’m going to ask on Thursday? (Hint: It has to do with internet.)
Since we are in the season of Lent, it is appropriate to re-evaluate our schedules and take an account of how much time we spend on ourselves compared to how much time we spend in service to others. We have an incredible example in Christ, who took care of his own necessary needs, yet dedicated incredible energy and time serving us. And he continues to serve us, nourishing our spirits and bodies with his body and blood every Sunday. In view of what God has done for us, what may the Lord be calling you to give up this year, so you can replace it with a work of service to those in need? If you sense that God may be pulling you towards joining in our service to BiG, please join me tomorrow night in discovering how we can support this wonderful ministry together.
Grace and peace,
Father Kurt is the Pastor of Light of Christ Anglican Church in Georgetown, TX
